Field Research Stay at ECOWAS Headquarters, Abuja

From 12 to 29 October 2025, Mona Saleh conducted a field research stay at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja as part of her ongoing work within the ANCIP network. The aim was to advance her research on how ECOWAS works with development partners and how these relations shape its non-military conflict intervention practices, including mediation, preventive diplomacy, and early warning. During the visit, she carried out archival research and met with staff across several departments, as well as with representatives of partner organizations working closely with ECOWAS.

The visit offered a comprehensive view of ECOWAS’s current challenges and evolving strategic priorities, including the effects of shrinking funding, increasing coordination among partners, institutional constraints within the Commission, and the political implications of the AES withdrawal. These exchanges provided insight into how ECOWAS navigates its work in a changing regional landscape and how different actors understand the organization’s role and direction.

The material collected during this stay will contribute to her ongoing research and will inform forthcoming academic and policy outputs within the ANCIP network.
