ANCIP at ENIUGH conference 2023 in Leiden
The ANCIP project attended the Seventh European Congress on World and Global History, held at Leiden University and The Hague from June 29 to July 1, 2023. The conference provided a dynamic platform for scholars and practitioners to delve into diverse aspects of world and global history under the headline “Conflict and Inequity, Peace and Justice: Local, Regional and International Historical Perspectives”.
The ANCIP project convened a panel on June 30, chaired by Ulf Engel, on African Non-Military Conflict Intervention Practices. The panel brought together researchers from the ANCIP network and other experts specialising in the African continent and its diaspora. The presentations included insights from Gilbert M. Khadiagala (Johannesburg) on “Mediation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC),” Vincent Schober, Camille Vern, and Elisabeth Warnck (Leipzig) discussing “The ANCIP Project,” Gilad Ben-Nun (Leipzig) sharing perspectives on “On the Palgrave Handbook of Diplomatic Thought and Practice in the Digital Age (2023),” and Prince Duah Agyei (Tampere) exploring “(Re)thinking the Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict in Ghana: A purposeful transformational agenda.” This panel, focused on African non-military conflict intervention practices, addressed crucial themes, including recent empirical contributions to these practices, insights from Southern Africa, and reflections on local mediation and peacebuilding efforts. The presentations delved into the legacies of failed mediation in intra-state conflicts. They discussed the often-overlooked non-military intervention practices of the African Union (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
