About the Project

Research on African non-military conflict intervention practices (ANCIP)

The network “African Non-Military Conflict Intervention Practices” (ANCIP) is a collaborative project of the Research Centre Global Dynamics (ReCentGlobe), Leipzig University, the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), and the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF), University of Duisburg-Essen.

With the project we focus on the academically so far neglected non-military conflict intervention practices of the African Union (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs). Through various activities our network aims to strengthen expertise on non-military actors relevant to peace and security policies on the African continent.

The main objectives of ANCIP are (1) to develop an online database of non-military conflict interventions by the AU and the RECs from 2004 onwards, (2) to empirically reconstruct non-military conflict intervention practices and routines by specific African actors, and (3) to advance the theoretical debate and to provide strategic policy advice on African non-military conflict interventions. The ANCIP Webinar Series has launched and will commence on July 10. The Webinar discussion will centre on the newly published ANCIP Working Paper by El-Ghassim Wane on “The African Union and Coups: Why Implementation Matters More than New Norms”. Amid calls to revise existing frameworks, participants of this webinar discuss what exactly the current challenges for the AU and the RECs are, and what lessons can be learned from past responses to UCGs.
